이수경

이수경(1963년생)은 회화, 조각, 설치, 영상, 퍼포먼스 등 매체의 경계를 끊임없이 넘나들며 독창적인 서사적 상상력의 영토를 구축해왔다. 그의 작업은 과거와 현재, 삶과 죽음, 성(聖)과 속(俗), 개인과 사회, 그리고 서로 다른 문화 간의 근본적인 질문들을 깊이 있게 탐구한다. 특히 고대 신화와 설화에서 얻은 영감을 개인적 경험과 결합하여 자신만의 독보적인 예술 세계로 펼쳐 보여준다.

이수경은 《이수경: 이동식 사원》(2023, 세르누치 미술관, 파리), 《달빛 왕관》(2021, 아트선재센터, 서울), 《먼길 이야기》(2021, 서울시립 북서울미술관, 서울), 《Whisper Only to You》(2019, 카포디몬테 미술관, 나폴리), 《믿음의 번식》(2015, 아뜰리에 에르메스, 서울), 《내가 너였을 때》(2015, 타이페이 현대미술관, 타이페이) 등 다수의 개인전을 통해 국제 무대에서 입지를 다져왔고, 《Monstrous Beauty: A Feminist Revision of Chinoiserie》(2025, 메트로폴리탄 미술관, 뉴욕), 《제14회 타이페이 비엔날레》(2025, 타이페이 미술관, 타이페이), 《아부다비 공공미술 비엔날레 2024–2025》(2024, 아부다비), 《57회 베니스 비엔날레》(2017, 베니스) 등 주요 국제 전시와 예술 행사에 초대되었다.

2025년에는 《아부다비 공공미술 비엔날레》에 참여해 중동에 한국의 예술과 전통 음악을 알리는 데 기여한 점을 인정받아 제44회 세종문화상(문화예술 및 인문과학 부분)을 수상했다.

이수경의 작품은 국립현대미술관, 서울시립미술관, 삼성미술관 리움 등 국내 주요 미술관과 메트로폴리탄 미술관, 로스앤젤레스 카운티 미술관, 보스턴 미술관, 시카고 미술관, 샌프란시스코 아시아 미술관, 영국박물관, 브리스톨 박물관, 홍콩 M+ 미술관, ARCO 컬렉션, 키이우 국립예술관, 살라마 빈트 함단 알 나흐얀 재단 등 해외 미술기관에 소장되어있다.

Yeesookyung (b.1963) has continually crossed the boundaries between media—including painting, sculpture, installation, video, and performance—to create a distinctive realm of narrative imagination. Her work explores fundamental questions concerning the past and present, life and death, the sacred and the profane, the individual and society, and different cultures. Drawing inspiration from ancient myths and folktales and weaving them together with personal experience, Yeesookyung has developed an artistic world distinctly her own.

She has built an international profile through numerous solo exhibitions, including 《Yeesookyung: Portable Temple》(2023, Cernuschi Museum, Paris), 《Moonlight Crowns》(2021, Art Sonje Center, Seoul), 《The Story of a Girl Named Long Journey》(2021, Buk-Seoul Museum of Art, Seoul), 《Whisper Only to You》(2019, Museo e Real Bosco di Capodimonte, Naples), 《Saint Breeders》(2015, Atelier Hermès, Seoul), 《When I Become You》(2015, Museum of Contemporary Art, Taipei). Her work has also been featured in major international exhibitions and art events, including 《Monstrous Beauty: A Feminist Revision of Chinoiserie》(2025, Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York), 《The 14th Taipei Biennial: Whispers on the Horizon》(2025, Taipei Fine Arts Museum, Taipei), 《Public Art Abu Dhabi Biennial 2024–2025》(2024, Abu Dhabi), 《57th Venice Biennale: Viva Arte Viva》(2017, Venice).

In 2025, Yeesookyung received the Sejong Culture Award (Culture, Arts, and Humanities) in recognition of her contribution to introducing Korean art and traditional music to the Middle East through her participation in the inaugural 《Public Art Abu Dhabi Biennial》.

Her work is held in the collections of major Korean museums, including the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, Korea (MMCA), the Seoul Museum of Art (SeMA), Leeum Museum of Art, as well as international institutions such as the Metropolitan Museum of Art, Los Angeles County Museum of Art, Museum of Fine Arts (Boston), Art Institute of Chicago, Asian Art Museum (San Francisco), the British Museum, Bristol Museum, M+ Museum (Hong Kong), Arco Collection, Mystetskyi Arsenal, and Salama bint Hamdan Al Nahyan Foundation.
