2022년 제정된 호반미술상은 자신만의 독창적인 예술 세계로 현대미술의 지평을 넓혀온 작가들의 치열한 예술정신을 기리는 상입니다. 매년 엄격하고 공정한 심사를 거쳐 작가를 선정하고, 수상자에게 상금 1억원과 개인전 개최를 지원함으로써 한국 현대미술의 다양성과 깊이를 확보하는 데 기여하고 있습니다. 올해 호반미술상은 전통과 현대, 파편과 재조합의 미학을 통해 독보적인 예술적 궤적을 그려온 작가 이수경을 선정했습니다.

회화, 조각, 설치, 영상, 퍼포먼스 등 매체의 경계를 끊임없이 넘나들며 독창적인 서사적 상상력의 영토를 구축해온 이수경의 작업 세계는 종종 2002년에 처음 등장한 〈번역된 도자기〉 연작을 중심으로 설명되지만 그의 실험과 시도는 특정 매체의 성역에 국한되지 않습니다. 깨지고 부서진 도자기 파편을 금박으로 이어 붙여 무한히 증식시키며 온전함과 원형(原型)이라는 이상적 권위에 도전해온 이수경의 방법론은 회화와 조각, 미디어 등 매체를 넘나들며 고스란히 적용됩니다. 2019년부터 지속해온 〈달빛 왕관〉 연작 역시 장식과 보석, 오브제를 더하고 덜어내는 무한한 반복을 통해, 왕관이 참칭해온 권위와 영광을 해체하고 눈부신 시각적 형태로 재조합해온 시도입니다.

이수경은 이번 수상 기념 전시에서 자신의 대표작인 〈번역된 도자기〉와 〈달빛 왕관〉 연작을 또 다른 차원으로 확장하고 새롭게 변주합니다. 인류의 기원을 품은 동아프리카로부터 중앙아시아를 가로질러 실크로드의 동쪽 끝에 이르는 광대한 여정, 그 길 위에 흩어진 신화와 설화, 근대문학 속 여성들의 서사는 작가에게 끊임없는 영감의 원천이 되어 이번 전시에서 선보이는 대규모 신작 설치로 이어지는 또 다른 여정을 지탱합니다. 이러한 맥락에서, 작가의 익숙한 방법론은 미지의 서사와 문학적 상상력, 그리고 새로운 조형 언어와 조우하며 스스로 증식하고 확장하는 다층적인 변주를 펼쳐 보입니다. 나아가 동시대 디지털 조건이 가능케 한 기술적 이기(利器)를 극한까지 밀어붙여 미디어적 확장을 시도한 신작 〈달빛 왕관〉(2026)은 실재하지 않는 상상 속 이미지를 명징하고 사실적인 21세기적 존재감으로 드러냅니다.

이번 수상 기념 전시는 작가가 오랜 시간 천착해 온 예술적 화두와 더불어, 끊임없이 진화하는 그의 시각적 변주를 한눈에 살펴볼 수 있는 뜻깊은 자리입니다. 호반미술상이 마련한 이 무대를 통해, 작가의 예술 세계가 지닌 깊은 울림이 관람객들의 마음에 닿아 새로운 사유의 지평을 열어주기를 기대합니다.

Established in 2022, the HOBAN Artist Awards honor the artistic rigor and vision of artists who have expanded the horizons of contemporary art through their singular artistic worlds. Each year, following a rigorous and impartial selection process, the Awards present the winner with a grant of KRW 100 million (approximately USD 65,000) and support for a solo exhibition, contributing to the diversity and depth of Korean contemporary art. This year, the HOBAN Artist Awards honor Yeesookyung, an artist who has forged a unique artistic path through an aesthetic language of tradition and modernity, fragmentation and recombination.

Moving fluidly across painting, sculpture, installation, video, performance, and other media, Yeesookyung has developed a distinctive artistic universe shaped by narrative imagination. Although her work is often understood through the lens of the 〈Translated Vase〉 series, first presented in 2002, her practice has consistently exceeded the boundaries of any particular medium. Yeesookyung’s signature methodology—joining shattered ceramic fragments with gold leaf and allowing them to proliferate into ever-expanding forms—challenges the idealized authority of wholeness and the notion of an original form. This approach extends seamlessly across her practice, transcending the boundaries of painting, sculpture, and media alike. Likewise, the 〈Moonlight Crown〉 series, which she has developed since 2019, unfolds through an endless process of adding and removing ornaments, jewels, and found objects, dismantling the authority and glory historically embodied by the crown and recomposing them into dazzling visual forms.

In this exhibition marking her receipt of the 2026 HOBAN Artist Awards, Yeesookyung extends and reimagines her signature 〈Translated Vase〉 and 〈Moonlight Crown〉 series in new and unexpected ways. Stretching from East Africa, the cradle of humanity, across Central Asia to the eastern end of the Silk Road, this vast journey—woven from myths, folktales, and the stories of women in modern literature—has long served as a source of inspiration for the artist. In this exhibition, it unfolds into another journey, realized through a new large-scale installation. Within this framework, her familiar methodologies encounter unfamiliar narratives, literary imagination, and new formal languages, giving rise to layered variations that continue to proliferate, mutate, and expand. 〈Moonlight Crown〉 (2026), a new work that pushes the possibilities of contemporary digital technologies to their limits, extends Yeesookyung’s practice into the realm of new media. In doing so, it grants imagined images a vivid and palpable twenty-first-century presence.

This exhibition provides a meaningful opportunity to explore the artistic questions Yeesookyung has pursued throughout her career, together with the constantly evolving visual language of her practice. Through this meaningful platform created by the HOBAN Artist Awards, we hope that the profound resonance of Yeesookyung’s artistic vision will reach visitors, opening new horizons of thought and reflection.
